Father John Andraos Shalhoub

A Life of Faith, Service, Wisdom, and the Written Word

Born on February 25, 1943, in Aita El-Foukhar, Lebanon, Father John Andraos Shalhoub has devoted his life to serving God, family, community, and country. A priest, military chaplain, counselor, educator, and author, his journey reflects a lifelong commitment to spiritual guidance, personal growth, and compassionate service.

Early Life and Spiritual Formation

Father John was born to Andraos Ferris Shalhoub and Nour Yousef Habib in the mountainous region of Lebanon, where faith and family were central to daily life. His early years were shaped by the traditions of the Antiochian Orthodox Church and the rich spiritual heritage of the Levant.

From 1958 to 1964, he studied for the ministry at Balamand Seminary in Lebanon, one of the most respected institutions of the Antiochian Orthodox tradition. There, he received theological training and developed the pastoral foundation that would guide his future ministry.

Following his seminary education, he served at the Antiochian Orthodox Patriarchate in Damascus, Syria, and worked in the Assyia Schools from 1964 to 1966. During this period, he was ordained as a Deacon by Patriarch Ignatius Hazim.

Journey to the United States

In November 1966, Father John immigrated to the United States at the invitation of Archbishop Michael Shaheen. He continued his education at the University of Toledo, studying psychology and laying the groundwork for a unique ministry that would combine spiritual care with counseling and human development.

Priesthood and Pastoral Ministry

On February 23, 1969, Father John was ordained to the Holy Priesthood by Archbishop Michael Shaheen at St. George Orthodox Church in South Glens Falls, New York.

Throughout his ministry, he faithfully served several Orthodox communities, including:

St. Nicholas Orthodox Chapel, Camp Johnson and Camp Lejeune

His ministry has been characterized by compassion, spiritual guidance, and a commitment to helping individuals and families navigate life’s challenges through faith.

Military Chaplaincy

In 1982, Father John was commissioned as an Eastern Orthodox Chaplain in the United States Navy. During his distinguished military service, he ministered to sailors, Marines, reservists, veterans, and their families.

Promoted to Lieutenant Commander in 1986, Father John became known for his dedication to providing spiritual care, counseling, and support during times of deployment, hardship, and personal transition.

Since 1985, he has served within the Onslow County School System as a teacher, counselor, and educational mentor. In 1990, he founded Shalhoub Family Counseling Services, providing counseling and family support to individuals, couples, and families.

Father John is also an accomplished author whose writings blend Christian spirituality, personal reflection, pastoral wisdom, and philosophical insight.
